About Rijndam Rehabilitation

Visit Rijndam, one of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in the Netherlands. We provide inpatient and outpatient care for children and adults with disabilities, medical complexity and those who require rehabilitation after illness or trauma. We work together with our patients, their families and our healthcare partners to improve functioning and quality of life. We focus on what really matters to our patients, helping them to achieve the maximum of their potential.

In order to provide this excellent care from 16 locations with 800 employees, Rijndam continuously invests in scientific research, innovations and education. Our research as well as our innovations are focused on three main spearheads: spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury and pediatric rehabilitation.

Research & Innovation

In the field of research, we work closely with the Erasmus University Medical Center. Led by the professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and in consultation with our medical staff, we build bridges between scientific research and patient care. Also our rehabilitation technology and innovations are positioned close to our patient care. For example Rijndam uses a ‘living lab’, a place for experimentation and innovation. The living lab offers students of the TU Delft and technology companies the opportunity to test their innovations together with end-users. Rijndam makes it possible to further develop innovations in a fully realistic rehabilitation process and environment.

For more information about Rijndam, please take a look at our website www.rijndam.nl

We invite you to register and join our Rehabweek 2022 lab tour on Friday 29 July 2022.

This lab tour will take place at de main location of Rijndam Rehabilitation, where also our inpatient clinic is located. Use this opportunity to learn and network with the local experts.

Tour attendees will visit a specially organized innovation market. We will show and demonstrate our technologies and innovations that have been developed to support people recovering from and living with disabling injury or illness.

Extra options:

Rehabweek 2022 delegates can choose from the following two tours:

  • Guided tour of our rehabilitation hospital

Participants will learn how our inpatient and outpatient care is organized. The tour shows the most important and interesting facilities of our rehabilitation institute.

  • Guided tour of Rijndam Orthopeadic company

Participants will visit the Orthopaedic company, located within Rijndam Rehabilitation. The department has its own workplace where they produce tailor-made arm and leg prostheses and different types of orthoses (splints and braces).  A combination of specialized doctors and practitioners, technicians and certified prosthetist and orthotist' work with our patients to find the best suitable solutions for limitations caused by illness or accident.

Both tours will take place in the Sophia Children’s Hospital located within the Erasmus University Medical Centre building. The Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital provides care for children with rare and complex disorders and was founded more than 150 years ago. We offer the entire spectrum of specialisms in the field of paediatric medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. The knowledge of all the disciplines involved in Sophia Children’s Hospital is bundled into four focus areas: The Mother and Child Center, The Pediatric Brain Center, The Center for Rare Diseases and The Paediatric Thoracic Center. We welcome you to the Child Brain Lab, an innovative test facility at the Pediatric Brain Center.

Brain development affects all aspects of life. Abnormal brain function in children has great consequences for cognition, behaviour, motor development and social interactions. . In the Pediatric Brain Center professionals of the Erasmus MC-Sophia, TU Delft and Erasmus University merge their expertise to facilitate optimal development in children with brain-related  disorders. We combine clinical care and research to generate developmental growth curves in relevant domains, to develop innovative and meaningful outcome measures, to study new treatments and to rapidly translate findings to these children.

Child Brain Lab (part 1)

As part of the Pediatric Brain Center, we are setting up a new test facility, the Child Brain Lab, to assess multiple metrics across domains, ranging from genotype, brain structure and neurophysiology to behavior, quality-of-life, and societal participation in child patients with a variety of brain-related disorders across the life course. We use a child-centered approach and state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. high resolution EEG, MRI, activity tracking).

This tour includes an introduction to the new Child Brain Lab and offers the possibility to experience a number of tests.

Generation R Study (part 2)

The Generation R Study is a prospective cohort study including more than 10,000 mothers and their children who are followed from foetal life until young adulthood in a multi-ethnic urban population. The study is designed to identify early environmental and genetic causes of normal and abnormal growth, development and health from foetal life until young adulthood. Results from the Generation R Study contribute to the development of strategies for optimizing health and healthcare for pregnant women and children within Rotterdam and beyond.

In 2017 Generation R launched the second cohort Generation R Next focussing on preconception phase and early pregnancy.

During this tour the Generation R team will explain this cohort study, you will be able to experience being a participant of Generation R by demonstrations of research measurements, and to be in contact with the research team.

The tour starts with a welcome and general introduction to cartilage and bone tissue engineering. Selected projects on cartilage and bone defect healing and tissue engineering approaches at the connective tissue repair lab will give the participants an overall view on what we can study in vitro as well as in vivo and where are the limitations (Andrea Schwab, photo).

During the labtour you have the chance to learn in more detail on the following topics:

  • In vitro cell culture and cell differentiation for cartilage and bone tissue engineering (Mike Broeders – Gleitz)
  • Biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (Michele Fenu)
  • In vitro and in vivo models to evaluate tissue engineering strategies for bone and cartilage repair (Andrea Lolli)

VR in healthcare and education (part 2)

VR applications are used on a daily basis within the Erasmus MC for improving healthcare and for education towards students and experienced surgeons and nurse specialists. This program will introduce you to a large number of VR applications used in our University Medical Centre. You will experience the various applications hands-on and speak to our colleagues who are responsible for the design and implementation.

Part of the tours will take place in the Research tower of the Erasmus University Medical Centre, all visitors will need to be registered on forehand to gain access to this building, please have your ID available upon entry.
